Ice reconnaissance

Ice reconnaissance is the method of information collection and studying on the ice coverage character in fully or partially freezing seas, large water reservoirs (lakes and pools) in streamflows (rivers, channels, etc.) and other inner water objects. It should be performed to provide safety of people, residential places, economic objects and terms and safety of civil navigation.

Ice reconnaissance tasks are revelation and account of the ice situation parameters and figures: location, borders, periods and terms of the ice coverage spreading, its thickness, ice concentration, ice deformity, snow cover, mobility, ridging, presence and size of cracks, ice-holes, washouts and openings, sizes, age and form of ice-cakes, location, configuration and condition of the ice edge, direction and speed of its drift, strength of ice, search of ice islands and other elements (figures).

The main requirements for ice reconnaissance are efficiency, continuity, trustworthiness and accuracy.

Ice reconnaissance data should be used to develop ice forecasts and provision of tasks solution to organize drifting stations in Arctic, pilotage amongst ices, selection of places for landing operations, construction of ice bridges, organization of runways and ice air fields, organization of measures against ice clogging, etc.

Water, air and space monitoring is the main ice reconnaissance method. The water ice reconnaissance should be performed by coast hydrometeorological facilities, land and drifting posts and stations, and automatic radio meteorological stations, ships (especially ice-breakers). The air ice reconnaissance is performed with the help of a specially equipped plane An-26B RL using a synthetic aperture. Data of meteorological and other artificial satellites of the Earth are used to determine borders, thickness and concentration of ice. Technical means for ice reconnaissance can be visual or instrumental including RSA-23 radars,aerial photography equipment, radiation thermographs, etc.

An ice situation forecast is prepared on the basis of the ice reconnaissance data and sent on demand. The ice reconnaissance data are collected, summarized, analyzed in an emergency response center and are the basis for taking well-ground decisions.
